The Leggings Dilemma!

So. This morning.

I awoke at 5:30 to a bawling four year old, telling me about a horrible dream he had. I groggily rolled out of bed and gave him a hug, pulled on some leggings, a dolman sweater (the same one I wore yesterday) over the tank top I slept in, and then stumbled into the bathroom to brush my teeth. Cub came in behind me, wiping his eyes, and asked if he could use my potty. I yawned and nodded and he walked into the potty room (water closet?) and came back out and said he couldn't use it, because there was toilet paper in it.

For reals.

So, I flushed the potty.

Which promptly overflowed onto the floor.

All before 7:00am.

Winning!

I hung my head, threw some towels on the floor, hoisted a pajama-clad Cub onto my hip, and headed out the door to get some coffee. A quiet drive and some yummy caffeine (and a now happy, chatty Cub) were exactly the remedy I needed. I quickly cleaned up the floor, woke up my husband, fed the kids, dressed Cub and Lydia, and threw on some mascara and my coat and headed out the door to take them to their 8:00am doctor's appointment.

I realized at the doctor's office that I was still wearing my leggings.

Now. A few months ago, if you had asked me my opinion on wearing leggings as pants in public, I would have said a resounding NO. They're TIGHT! GROSS!

However.

As I sat there, I realized my tank top (yes, the one I slept in) was long enough to cover ... you know. Cover what it needed to. And my dolman sweater (yes, the one I wore yesterday) was nice and baggy. And my coat was chunky. And, my boots were tall, so all in all, not much of my legs were exposed.

Plus, these leggings are thick and not like tights-leggings.

When I walked in the door after coming home from the doctor, I asked my hubby to take a quick picture of me so I could write a post about leggings. So. This is me about fifteen minutes ago, ha ha:

And now I ask you: Are leggings okay to wear in public? I am starting to lean towards "yes", under certain circumstances ... especially on a morning like this morning. Will I wear them for a dinner out? No (unless I'm wearing a tunic or something). But for running errands, mopping up toilet water, etc., I actually don't mind them as much as I used to.

Now. What do YOU think?? Yay, or nay?

Have a lovely day!

  1. When the behind is fully covered, by all means. :)

  2. to me, those hardly qualify as leggings. They seem thick and kind of looseish....? But maybe it's the pic. I think that outfit is completely okay and VERY cute. As long as you aren't wearing those thin stretchy workout pants and showing your whole butt then I say go for it. I wear yoga pants out all the time.... and sometimes workout pants too...so yeah... I say you have plenty of coverage and look great!

    1. They are loose-ish. I bought them right after Lydia was born and thankfully, they're a little baggier now, ha ha! Good grief, I carried that girl in my thighs.

    2. Exactly - those don't look like leggings! If you look like the college girls I saw visiting a local university a year ago, then leggings are not OK in public. It is not OK to wear a loose-ish (but not long enough) white button down, tight-like black leggings, and your Uggs. That's just crazy. Your outfit is adorable.

  3. I think you look great and totally appropriate! I have been an ardent "Leggings are not pants" advocate for quite some time (due to the abundance of girls at the U of M who wore leggings so thin you could see every nook and cranny, every bit of panty line/lace, and with cropped tops!), so I consider myself an expert on these this topic ;)

  4. I love wearing leggings with a longer vest (that covers my butt). I even got adventurous and bought faux "leather" leggings. I love them! They are appropriate if styled correctly. I'd rather see leggings than sweatpants.

  5. Leggings are not pants, and I do not care. I wear leggings everywhere.

    (that was very Suessical)

  6. Agree with Chicago Mom...I'd rather see (non-threadbare, non-too-thin) leggings than sweatpants. And I love Ty's leggings poetry. ;) Funny post!

  7. I think you look fabulous and adorable! I agree with your thought process. Legging are appropriate for certain days, but not all the time and only when they do cover... ya know. :-)

  8. I like leggings as long as everything is covered. You look great! I love your whole style btw. I'm hoping you will post some pics of fallish outfits or what you are wearing to Thanksgiving dinner. I am looking for inspiration. Of course I will be about 16 weeks pregnant with baby number 5 so that limits me a little but not much.

    1. Hey, congrats! I hadn't even thought about my Thanksgiving dinner attire! Must be spit-up proof, ha. ;) Thank you for your sweet compliment! I think I can post some pics of outfits, barring no dead animals in my dining room or overflowing toilets... ;)

  9. Yes. As long as your top covers your bottom regardless of your size & they are not "see through" thin. Super cute with a tunic and boots for casual errands.

  10. I think you look great! I am slowly thinking about eventually trying this leggings-as-pants trend. (Do you sense my hesitation?!) I think it can be cute, in appropriate times/places. I just don't know if I am comfortable pulling it off myself!!
