Different Verse.

I am continually delighted with the differences between my two kids. I think the differences seem more obvious sometimes because one is boy and the other is a girl, but it's safe to say the difference lies in their personalities as well.

One difference I've found myself subconsciously creating are the songs I sing as their lullabies. With Cub, his lullaby was a French lullaby that my Mom used to sing to me. I've mentioned it here before, but it goes something like this:

Dodo, Dodo,
Fermer, fermer, tes beaux yeux,
Dodo, Dodo,
Fermer tes beaux yeux!

(Pardon any incorrect grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. My last French class took place in college in 2003 and my mother last sung this song to me in the early nineties. It's been a while.)

It essentially means, "Night-Night, Night-Night, Close your beautiful eyes".

It's soft and sweet and was perfect for my snuggly, big blue-eyed Cub. It's still perfect for him. He loves to cuddle when he first wakes up in the morning or after naps, and I still sing it to him during those cuddle times.

For Naomi, I've found myself singing "You Are My Sunshine", another song my Mom used to sing to me. It can be soft or it can be bright (kind of like the rays of the sun!), both of which are telling of Naomi's personality. She snuggles while I sing it to her at night and bounces with bright delight when I sing it to her during the day. She really is our sunshine!

What about you? Do you have a specific lullaby you sing to your baby or child? Or, if you have more than one child, do you have more than one song?

Have a lovely day!

  1. I used to sing "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and old hymns to my son. He was so little (4 and a half pounds) when we brought him home, and I was terrified. I think those songs were as much for me as for him, but they always seemed to calm him down and they stuck.

  2. I have a few for Riggins... "Lullaby" and "God Speed" by the Dixie Chicks and "Baby Mine." And we sing a lot of old hymns!

  3. Ever since the girls were itty bitty I took the book "Love You Forever" and turned the moms song into a tune I made up. We sing it every single night and it's immediately followed with "Jesus Loves Me". It's almost as if "Love You Forever" isn't complete without "Jesus loves Me". ha! And you know what? The girls will be 10 in a couple of weeks and they still require our nightly singing. I love it! :)

  4. this was funny for me to sit and think on and i'm with leslie - i sing GOBS of hymns to the kids all the time. but i'm not really sure if they like them as much as i love to sing them. ha. then it hit me that we don't really do lullaby's - isn't that terrible??! but then i thought more and realized lincoln's personality is so explosive and upbeat that literally his "calming down" songs are still the ones that are up-tempo and have motions. the three requests he has from me on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis are "Rudolph" "Do a Deer" (as he calls it), and "This Little Light of Mine".

  5. Rod Stewart's "Have I Told You Lately" and Christopher Cross' "Sailing" are two songs that I frequently sing to Eli. This may be a dead giveaway that I am new to this, as neither are lullabies. Eli is a big will.i.am fan. (no lie, he stops everything when he hears him) We also like The Carpenters. Guess I'm raising him right, huh? ;)

  6. Sleepy Train & Weebie Boy. They're both "homemade" songs just for him. I catch him humming them a lot and it melts my heart into a puddle of goo. :)
